International Care at Johns Hopkins: Frequently Asked Questions

  • The international division of Johns Hopkins Medicine coordinates care for international patients traveling to the United States for complex medical care. It also provides consulting services to improve health and health care delivery around the world.

  • Traveling to the United States to receive care — especially for rare and complex conditions — can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to guide you through the journey.

  • After submitting your request for an appointment, here’s what you can expect:  

    Step 1: Submit Required Information

    A patient coordinator will contact you within one business day. Please have the following material and information ready:

    • Medical issue to be addressed
    • Applicable medical records
    • Demographic information: gender, date of birth, ethnicity, etc.
    • Mailing address
    • Copy of passport
    • Copy of insurance card (we will verify your benefits at the time of appointment scheduling)
    • Your preferred time frame for an appointment
    • United States-issued visa

    Step 2: Receive Your Visit Itinerary and Cost Estimate

    • We will provide you with a confirmation packet detailing your appointments, care providers and other important information related to your visit.
    • You will receive a cost estimate for scheduled services.

    Step 3: Confirm Your Visit and Payment

    It is important that you confirm your visit 10 days prior to your arrival. If you are paying out of pocket, payment is due in full before services can be provided.

    Step 4: Travel to Johns Hopkins for Care

    We will coordinate your clinical services, allowing you more time to focus on your return to health. If needed, language assistance is provided through in-person, video remote and over the phone interpreting.

    Step 5: Travel Home with Everything You Need

    We will ensure that you have all necessary medical records, prescriptions and follow-up instructions from from your care team. You will receive a consolidated final bill, and a patient coordinator will be available for continuing support and to schedule future visits, if needed.

  • Please contact the U.S. consulate or embassy in your country to inquire about visa processing time and requirements. Johns Hopkins Medicine International does not provide visa invitation letters. When your appointment is scheduled, we will provide you with a letter of confirmation for your visit.

  • The Johns Hopkins Find Your Way app will help you get to and around the buildings of  The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. This free app will help you:
    • Get step-by-step directions to appointments.
    • Locate and save your parking spot.
    • Find amenities and services along your way.
    • Search for a physician or provider.
    • Access MyChart.

    This app is available on the Apple App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Android devices.

  • Yes, interpreter services are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week through in-person, video remote, and over the phone interpreting.

  • Yes. Johns Hopkins Medicine International will prepare a cost estimate for the services you will receive. We will also help verify insurance or embassy coverage. And we are available if you have questions about your final bill. For the latest information about our financial services, please see our billing information website.

  • Johns Hopkins Medicine has contracts with several international insurance companies and accepts letters of authorization from several embassies. If you have insurance or embassy sponsorship, your international financial coordinator will verify coverage and request that you pay a deposit of the amount your insurance or embassy does not cover. If we cannot obtain pre-authorization from your insurance company or embassy, or if Johns Hopkins Medicine does not participate with your insurance company or embassy, we will ask you to make a deposit for your treatment.

  • To obtain balances on accounts, patients or their representatives should contact our international patient financial services team by phone (+1-410-502-7683) or by email (IntlPFSCustomerSrvc@jhmi.edu).

  • If your deposit is more than the actual charges, we will refund the difference. If your deposit is less than the actual charges, we will send you a bill for the difference.

  • You do not need to be in the United States to receive your final statement or a refund. We will ask you to provide an email address and a home address so we can contact you when the statement is ready and, if applicable, refund you by check.

  • You can access your medical records through Johns Hopkins Medicine MyChart, a secure website that provides the most up-to-date medical information available to you about your Johns Hopkins care and connects you to your health care team. MyChart is available in English and Spanish. If you choose, we can also send your medical records to you and your physician back home.
